suggestions on what to do with 9 qts of WBS oyster spawn
    #8583367 - 07/01/08 09:03 AM (4 months, 29 days ago)

Ok, I now have 9 quarts of WBS fully colonized with Oyster (Pleurotus ostreatus).  Now what?  It is hot as hell outside and rains everyday (FL) so I don't think outside is good, but what do I know, that's why I am asking .  Let me know what you guys think I should do with this.

Make a bunch of straw bags or baskets and stick those suckers under a tree on something solid like bricks  and let the rain do it's job.

will that work in this weather?  It got up to like 90 today and only gets down to about 75 at night.  It does rain pretty much every evening though and I could put them where the sprinklers would hit them for about an hour a day.

Mine are fruiting in the same kind of climate, but without the rain. I have to add humidity. Just make sure there is enough surface moisture to allow for evaporation. Like  just keep the outside of the plastic misted. If it is raining every day I wouldn't worry too much.  If the ground stays wet it will definitely be evaporating from there at 90 degrees.  In that case keep the bags lower to the ground and there will be plenty of humidity. Just remember to keep them out of the sun. Like under a well shaded tree or behind a shed where there is only indirect sunlight.

what about indoor grows?  The outside climate just seems too hot to me.  Cubes would never grow in this, your telling me that oysters will?  I have never grown oysters before so I doon't know.  I will try outside if you say so though.

Oh yes they would! Cubes that is. I have seen cubes grow in 95 degree weather/ 100% humidity in the middle of the death summers of Oklahoma before many of times.  With a little planning that is:tongue:

As for the oysters you might also try colonizing inside and starting up the pin set by draping a perforated wet piece of plastic over the bags to keep the humidity really high.. Then move outside to the shade and keep them misted with your sprinklers and/or rain. They will grow as long as you keep the area moist but not wet. If you want you also could throw down a layer of perlite under the tree and place the bags above that. As long as the temperature doesn't go above 95F, I think they would be ok as long as you tended to them on a regular basis. Next time its hot use pink or yellow oysters. They love the heat.

I know this might seem a little crazy, but I always have had this Idea of pitching a dome tent up in my house, filling the bottom with damp perlite and venting it with a fan that points downward into the perlite to create humidity. I always think about it every time I am in the camping store.

Ok I will try it outside.  How would you make the bags you keep referring to?  I was thinking of doing a laundry basket outside like RR's video shows.

Bags as in 1or 2 mil ice bags or polyethylene tubing. Pasteurized straw mixed with spawn packed into them, with holes punched in the bags.

I use .5 quart to 1 bag. You can use more though. I don't know how you plan on pasteurizing the straw. I just pasteurize, slowly cool on and under a tarp outside, mix in all the spawn, and pack. Thats all there is to it. I like to pasteurize for 1 hour @ 140F and then do another batch with the same water.
