Spawning ratio question
    #8575729 - 06/28/08 09:49 PM (5 months, 1 day ago)

Hey guys,
I am planning on growing Pink Oysters on supplemented weat straw. I will be growing in baskets about 4ft long by 8 inches round. My question is about how many pounds worth of grain spawn will I need to inoculate per log?
Faffle- you had said you use 4 quarts per log, what does that translate to in pounds?? About three or four? My mind works in metric so any help would be much appreciated! Thanks.

You'll want anywhere from 4 to 8 liters of colonized grain spawn.  I make 8" to 10" diameter logs, and use two quart jars per foot of log when using a high spawn ratio, and half that amount if I'm wanting to spread my spawn further.  Since the grain spawn is a major part of the final substrate nutrient content, a high spawn ratio is a benefit to fruiting as well as a help to speed up colonization.

I use a 5% ratio spawn to wet weight of straw and no supplements.  I let the mycecium get all the nutrients from the straw.  Spawn is expensive and also grain is expensive and going up.  Why waste it?  (I usually make about 35 3 ft X 12 in. per week)
