Morel and Oyster Grow log

So I'm trying my hand at gourmets after dabbling in a few bulk grows of actives. I'll update as i go with pics and info. I started off with culture plates of Morel Oyster and Shitake (thanks to a fellow cultivator). For this grow log I'm starting off with Oyster and Morel. I transfered wedges from the master plates to my mix of peroxide agar. I experimented with using Milo (malt drink) as the nute for my agar. I couldn't find any specific measurments of milo so i used 3g agar/.7g milo/147ml H20/ 3ml 3% H202. No incubation/room temp of mid 80's. I'll update with growth pics in a week. Take care

I personally don't think that the Milo was a good idea. Isn't Milo a chocolate-malt drink? You can easily get a years supply of Malt Extract from a brewing store for around $5. Hope it works out well for you.

Already you've screwed up with the morels. You can't start them off with a huge amount of nutrients. They will not do what they are supposed to do. It takes only two weeks for sclerotia to form.
Yellow morels growing in gravel under porch.
Yellow Morel growing still after a snow fall
A suspicious morel. Looks yellow but secretly looks morphologically like a black morel.

What varieties have you been able to get sclerotia to form after two weeks?

I haven't attempted growing morels before. Could you enlighten me? the nutes in the agar seems minimal to me, previously they were grown out on nute free agar plates. I know i could search but if you're to respond. Any thoughts on what subs to inoculate/spawn to?

The morels I got were ones I bought from an international foods grocery store called "Jungle Jim's" go to http://www.junglejims.com/ I got some morels there that were picked commercially from out of state. They obviously weren't the yellows cause they had no odor except maybe an alfalfa smell to a few but the majority was odorless. They were huge and flesh tone all over and the ridges of the pits were lateral just like the black morels, plus there were some smaller black ones in with these pale mature specimens, they were pale because they were ready to shoot spores.
Plus I was able to buy agar from this place.
But guess what.
I checked the sealable pyrex bowl I used to culture the morel spawn on agar, about a year old now and still growing, well I got a morel growing in it. It must have used up all the nutrients it could find in the agar, and first it was a reddish-orangish spot in the agar next to the side of the bowl, then a white lump developed, and now it has gotten bigger and looks like a stem base forming, the cap still needs to develop further.
I have to get my dad's camera. I just found this today.
That link is worthless MycoAu, they deceive you on that site plus they are recycling the same puke that the Farm posted.
Here is a link to the information on the substrate you need to use.http://www.mssf.org/mnews/0303mn.pdf Pay special attention to the outdoor cultivation.
The Lump
   underneath the lump

Springtails but what species? Hypogastruridae? Hypogastrura armata?

I'd just found that particular article just the other day- and printed the part on the morels. (in reference to the Mycena News article)
I just didn't have a link to it so I posted one of the first "general" cultivation links I saw for morels. I apologize- I didn't mean to spread bad info.
Thanks for the prints. I hope you get decent mileage from those cultures. (Be sure to make masters of any you decide to work with long term.)

one side nutritious and the other side non-nutritious. But what's the point in trying to grow them on agar? Unless you are just trying to create a starter culture dish not for the purpose of fruiting. But don't count on fruiting from the dish, it'll take a year. Plus you need moist airflow. You have to understand, to get sclerotia you must follow The Firewall Technique.

I'm not trying to fruit off the agar dishes just to start several master cultures to store. Thats why I'm wondering what the downside to a petri with nutes vs. one without for morels. I'll do some reading. Other than that the Morel dishes have started to grow myc/so has the one cube dish/the oysters have yet to show new growth. But hey its only been two days. No contams thus far. Thank you peroxide agar. Pics to come when it gets a little more animated.
