I like to walk on paths that ATV have ripped up. I always find them growing there. Another spot i like is where a music fest is every year. I check around all of the fire pits and find em. Ask around and see if you can go hunting with someone to learn where you need to hunt.

Well I find that they grow in a wide range of woodlands in my area. I find mine in deciduous woods, with mixed trees, like elm, beech, etc. They can be very hard to spot at first, so a slow thorough approach, carefully examining the ground is ideal. If you find one, there is likely many more to be found growing nearby.

When do you go, From what I have read it is in may just when the apple trees are blooming. I am sure the window of opportunity is short. I do not know of any other fine edibles in spring besides morels but I am sure there are... in N.Y.. any help? Sorry if this is in the wrong forum

I go looking for them in the spring. The prime pickings in my area are in may. I am somewhat south of New York though. Those photos were taken on may 8th 2005.
