Why Do Dumb Pretty Girls Hang Out With Other Dumb Pretty Girls?

So, I had the TV on and that Hills show on MTV came on. I noticed how every single girl on the show was only friends with other pretty girls. I thought this was really weird, I kept asking myself, "where are the ugly girls at? why don't they have any friends that are ugly?"
Then I looked back on my high school years and I remembered how all the pretty girls were only friends with other pretty girls.
I'm confused here. What is the reason for this, do they judge a persons character based on looks? If that is the case, where in the world would they even get that idea?
If you're a girl, does having more pretty friends make you more popular? What's this all about?
