 Is god necessary?

I realize this is a bit of a silly question.
I'm wondering if some one could point me towards some decent lit on the subject. I would rather avoid far left/wack job shit.
By necessary, I mean, what difference does the existence of a god make on the life of a Christian or an atheist. If he is alive, or if he is dead, does is matter?
I realize this is poorly worded but I hope you get what Im after. Nothing more than passing curiosity so no dissertations please.

I'm an atheist and basically the only reason why the existence (or lack thereof) of god matters to me is because religion can be a large dividing force in the world and is often a large source of international conflict. Also, I was raised in a society where I was taught to question everything, using multiple forms of data to verify that something could be true. The blind belief in god is basically going against how i've learned to learn and trust things. Also, I feel that people often rely on god as an echo chamber of sorts...allowing their good luck to be attributed to him and keeping in contact with him when things get bad. I feel like it gives people a better sense of control in their lives, like even when bad things happen their is a higher power looking out for them. To me, it's all a little wacky and fairytale-esque, but i guess some people need that. that what you were looking for?

I'd say what difference it makes depends on the person. Atheists hold beliefs too, usually following science or ignorance. Science is no better or worse than religion (spirituality if you prefer) in my mind, they are more like two very divergent studies of the same things, our lives and environment. Science is for the most part more reliable; it holds truer over time. Religion and spirituality help people in as many ways as there are forms of them in the world. Both contribute to wars. Both contribute to community.
Morals are derived from one's environment. Whether you are raised with certain beliefs or left alone to discover, you look to your past, your emotions, or both, in order to make the decisions you do every day. Is it possible that by belief in God, your morals are automatically attuned to "correct"? Sure, but how do you decide which god to believe in? Your community or family, usually. Better hope you got the right one.

Necessary to achieve what, exactly? Happiness? A long life? Financial stability? An afterlife?
The answer to the first three is clearly "no, God isn't necessary" and the answer to the last one is "which God are you asking about?"

I mean it depends on the person, but for me God is in no way necessary. I can explain everything without god. I can feel fulfilled and spiritual without god. I can be happy without god. I can even view my own death without god and not have fear over it.

christians think that they are being protected by angels, holy spirit, god(s) etc
atheists know that its just galaxies out there and religion is pure bullshit, there are no gods
