The Spirituality of Ale
    #8205339 - 03/28/08 09:18 AM (4 months, 29 days ago)

There is some interesting history of brewing with the Catholic church involved (and monopolizing) the brewing of a more potent "gruit ale" that people loved. Problem was, no one could get the proprietary recipe (Classic Coke in days of old.) And, if anyone dared to brew their own the Catholic church hit guys would just whack that person. "Ye dare to defy God and brew ye own?" Whack!!

Anyway, along came the Protestants who couldn't stand the idea of all those people having fun. It just wasn't fair when the Protestants never have any fun. Besides, the Catholics were the competition.

So, the Protestants said "God Orders Ye to use only Hops" because hopped beer made the people fall asleep earlier and have less sex. This made the people attend more and be more attentive at church the next day and thus more donations. That and it pissed off the competition the Catholics who could no longer (along with everyone else) make the gruit ale.

Well, here we are it's already 2008. The Catholics own everything including BUD stock. Why would they waste their time on brewing when they own the company(s)? The Protestants and their sedating hopped beer won out over the more stimulating or (gasp!) psychotropic versions of gruit ale. You can still read about mead but try finding some.

The other part of all of this goes back to the individual versus the group. Then as now individual spirit is frowned upon but the difference now is that very few individuals have or want to have individual spirit even though the church doesn't whack someone for brewing their own now.

Agree, disagree, discuss?

Very interesting, I never knew hops was a sedative. The wiki article on gruit seems to lay blame elsewhere though, where did your information come from? I'd love to know more about this.
