Trolling
    #8064129 - 02/24/08 11:36 AM (8 months, 24 days ago)

I'm confused by trolling.

I may be completely wrong and confused in my definitions here, if I am just let me know! Also this may not be welcome in this forum, I just think there will be more in-depth thought in the responses here.

Its a bannable offense yet it appears that trolling is indistinguishable from paranoia. When you think that someone is trolling you have to make assumptions about the motives of the poster. So what defines a real troll and just a paranoid response?

I assume it is just that a troller will consistently say things intended to provoke an emotional response but some peoples opinions consistently provoke emotional response so how do we know if they are trolling or just opinionated?

:strokebeard:

I should also apologise for that lack of interestingness in this topic. Its just something thats been baffling me that I want to clear up.

People troll all the time here, (not myself of course) and it's tolerated as long as you're not too mean about it.

There is trolling for purpose to stir up people and get them thinking, and then there is useless trolling. Avoid useless trolling.

Typing something, just for the attention, is trolling...

Compared to fish trolling, one just let a net sink, and drag it for some distance, then "haul" it aboard.. Taking what ever they get... (Even if it is the precious coral reefs...) [What some humans do for money, is surely worth crying.]

..or compare it with a simple ban from a forum and/or a chat...

(Some do it for no other reason.)

Then again..

How can one feed a troll?

By creating.. (..eh?)

If there was no fish in the see, there would be no fish trollers...

If there was no bans, there would be no Forum/IRC trollers..

..now you might wonder why? Cause there is something called "Ignore" ..

One need not chose for others... Only for oneself! ...

In the Ron Paul forums, it was amazing how often people would call others trolls. It was like accusing them of being Communists to the cause!

People are :cuckoo:

It is possible to develop a predictive sense of the motivations and intentions of others; it doesn't have to be rooted in paranoia, or a knee-jerk response agansit anyone holding a different point of view than you (the way terms like liberal and mystic are used).

Trolling is called trolling because its just that. Its like taking a cat, tied up by rope, and dragging it through the woods for the wolves, leading them along in the process. Sometimes its possible to see the rope.

Only the :sherlock: who become are the objective discerners of whether or not someone is a troll.

I think trolling should be absolutely allowed. It weeds out the weak and gullible. We sure love to baby people in this culture.

You could also say that flaming does this, though?

Should there be no rules? Wheres the boundary?

Flaming disrupts things too much and makes things personal. You can troll and not really care what you catch as long as you catch something. Flaming does not weed out the weak; take a look at OTD.

i have been consistently offensive to someone
actually lots of people have reacted badly to me but one is really not working out at all.
i had tried no harder than normal to be irrascible.
his needs were different though and
i had to block him
now i have no idea what he posts and i never react in any way to what he posts
it seems to be working.
he has stopped complaining about me.
(at least I do not see those complaints)
it is as if we are now invisible to eachother

I don't know how to post on this forum without trolling. Who would post here to hear others agree?

Any real philosophical debate in this forum has to break one of the rules, or at least piss someone off around here to establish its root.

The Tao Te Ching focuses on the duality of yin and yang, but the teaching itself is non-duality. In the same way, the ideal of egolessness is not achieved by making ego, or identity (personalism), a bannable offense, but by actually being 100 percent genuine. Subverting it to the politically correctness of bad humor, false compassion, or whatever just makes things worse.

I would be in favor of dropping some of the rules in this forum. Lately Ive found it to impossible to converse in this forum with these rules, because first I cant rise above my ego, but at the same time I cant play the politically correct ego game because i find it disgusting. In the clashing of egos, I find it best to say exactly what is on my mind, or nothing at all. And of course an ego battle, is 100 percent personal.

Ironically enough, I brought this up in a past debate, (not too skillfully) and the form of the debate perfectly demonstrated this, and I was forced to bow out.

Ive learned I cant obey the rules and be genuine at the same time, so ive stopped posting, except in regaurd to this particular issue. I think we need to observe and explore why people say things in the way they do more than their rhetoric.

Years ago, Alan Watts conceived of "Wisdom in Insecurity"
and thats what I can appeal toward.
