Qigong and Tao?
    #8066110 - 02/24/08 08:17 PM (8 months, 23 days ago)

I'm so ignorant on both of these subjects, but for the folks out there who aren't. Are these two connected in anyway?

Qigong (energy work) is a modern term for what used to be known more widely as neigong (internal work), which refers to a plethora of methods for self-cultivation practiced by the Daoists. Some systems focus on boosting health and longevity, others for strength and martial arts skills, and others for the pursuit of enlightenment.

If you want to understand Taoism read Tao Te Ching.

Sounds much like the "Way of the Potatao".

The important thing to know about The Tao is that it is ineffable and trancends language - which is why there are so many books on it.

Everything is connected to Tao. It's just a concept for us to play with when chaos gets overwhelming.

One day Ananda, who had been thinking deeply about things for a while, turned to the Buddha and exclaimed, "Lord, I've been thinking - spiritual friendship is at least half of the spiritual life!"

The Buddha replied: "Say not so, Ananda, say not so. Spiritual friendship is the whole of the spiritual life!"

You are correct in saying that the Tao cannot be described, but let me introduce you to the concept of a "signpost". Tao Te Ching is a signpost. A signpost points in the direction of understanding a concept. It gives clues as to the meaning and intention of the concept even if it cannot describe the concept directly. A road sign does not describe the destination...it just tells you what direction to travel.

What really tickles me are the vast number of books that 'translate' The Tao te Ching from poetic imagery to actual advice and description.

Just because The Tao cannot be described doesn't prevent everybody and their dog from trying to do it and capitalize on the vague mystery of it all.

Unless by capitalize you mean jizz and vague mystery you mean the upholstery.
