People coming together

I was on a bike ride and I came to an intersection where a mother duck was walking with her babies through the middle of the street. All the cars stopped and people came out of their cars to help them across and made sure they weren't hurt.
And some people say humanity is a lost cause.

Do you think it is possible, that we are conditioned to more readily identify with negative aspects of life, to highlight misery and suffering in our minds and overlook the everyday simple moments of beauty? Do you find what you look for?
Some see a group of people stopping to help the ducks, another an annoying delay in their travel plans...
I find the word "humanity" a little slippery, however there are instances of it all around...
