Well, the title says it all anyway... General of the Salvation Army? Aren't those the people that refer to death as "promoted to glory"?

This shit makes me want to puke...
"Is it not possible so to curb and train the spirit of the wild animals of the forest that they shall become your willing servants...f you can do all this, surely the beautiful children whom Christ has redeemed with His precious Blood, and whom God has placed under your charge, and whom the Holy Spirit is waiting to influence, can be moulded and fashioned..."
Right...so they acknowledge the fact that wild animals have spirit, and that they twist and distort it to their will...and that hey, since we can do that, lets do the same to our children!

"By the way," Hawking added, "ever think about what'd happen if you, say, went back in time and accidentally killed your own younger self? Man, that shit would be so fucked up."

Last year, I went to a church a few times. I needed some help, and I brought my kids along. They attended Sunday School, and always seemed jovial, and generally happy about attending Sunday School.
Yesterday, as my oldest son (4 years old) and I looked at my Modern Art book, we came across a painting of Christ on the cross, by Gaugin. My son started going berserk, "That's Jesus! He's my friend! He wants me to come to HIS house in the sky someday. He has lots of toys and yummy food in his house!" I was a bit shocked, and somewhat horrified. I asked my son what Jesus was doing, (Hanging on a cross) and he said "He's about to hug some people actually". I think he knew that something kind of scary was going on in the painting, but having heard some obvious propaganda involving the "fun" nature of Jesus, he couldn't reconcile it with what was happening in the painting.
It hit me later that it has been over 6 months since he went to that church, and we only went 4 or 5 times. I thought, "Holy Crap!! What the hell did they do to make him remember this so clearly?" It seems a sort of child brainwashing operation.
Anyhow, I feel really guilty about exposing him to the opinions of others being presented to him as fact, and besides saying "Yes, that is what SOME people think" I really don't know what to say to him.
I don't think it's a big serious thing, many of us went to church for years, and learned later in life to make up our own minds. Yet this is still pretty disturbing to me...

Its surprising how easily young children are influenced, especially by adults who are resolute in their ideals. I used to go to Sunday school every week until I was about 10, and I pretty much believed everything I was told. Why shouldn't I have? As a kid you pretty much trust most adults because they seem so much older and wiser than you...how could they be wrong? And then they tell you about a happy place up in the sky, and that a benevolent protector is watching over you and guiding you, what child would not want to believe that? Its like Santa Claus. Finally, once I stopped going, and started taking middle school science classes, I started to put the pieces together and realized most of what I was taught at Sunday school was bunk. I was an atheist by high school.
At such a young age, its hard for kids to get a grasp on the world. I actually think I benefited on the most part for going to sunday school while I was young. It taught me morals, how to be a good person. Later I realized the religious part was crap. I would say let your kids believe what they want for now, when they are old enough they will be able to decide for themselves what they think is right. Of course...it doesn't hurt to have a little guidance from the parents.
