Mushrooms, toadstool and other fungi are a prominent and colourful feature of New Zealand pastures, parklands and the forest floor, yet few aids to their identification are available. This book is the answer, listing more than 300 species of common fungi, with numerous line drawings and a selection of colour photographs. The result is an essential field guide, suitable for amateur naturalists, students and professional botanists. |
Mushrooms of North America

In this beautifully illustrated book, Phillips vividly presents the world of mushrooms. Unlike the photographs in other guides, which are taken in the field, the more than 1000 color photographs featured here were shot in the studio in order to capture both the external features of mushrooms as well as their internal anatomy. Each picture includes specimens representing various stages of growth, and the accompanying annotation describes the anatomy of the cap, gills, stem, and spores. In addition, the author explains where the particular species of mushroom is found, its season of growth, and whether or not it is edible. Amateur mycologists as well as professionals in the field will find this book an invaluable guide. Highly recommended as a basic library reference source. |

This is the book you must have if you are even casually interested in wild mushrooms. Great photographs and very good descriptions of the most commonly encountered species. A nice touch of humor to make it more than just a reference. Don't miss this one!

Everything you have ever wanted in a field guide, pictures pictures and more pictures. Every mushroom is photographed and represented clearly from all angles, even cross sections showing the flesh. Good descriptions for every one, maybe not the longest description but detailed enough. The photos make identifying mushrooms a breeze. We would recommend this book to any one interested in Mushrooms. |

This book is designed primarily for those who are looking to collect mushrooms for eating purposes. It provides a basic introduction to terminology, but little other scientific information. As a brief guide it is very good; it focuses on common mushrooms found in the midwest. The keys are fairly cursory because of the necessary length constraint, but the discussions of major groups of mushrooms are interesting and fairly informative. There is some minor inconsistency; although the introduction stresses safety ("rule #1; never eat it unless you're 100% sure what it is") later mushroom descriptions make such broad statements as "a lactarius with red milk is generally safe." Applying a little caution, and in conjunction with a more extensive guide, this can be a good resource. |
