While "edibility" is part of the description of the 72 featured species this is not a guide for the gatherer. Bessette (Utica College) and Miller (Virginia Polytechnic Institute) and their wives focus upon those mushrooms not found in most guidebooks. Good color photos accompany the standard natural history. |

This is a 36 page A5 booklet giving information on British hallucinogenic mushroom species. It has some good colour photos of Psilocybe semilanceata. The other species are only given line drawings which in practice are of little use. The book provides details on ten psilocybin mushrooms and two species of psychotropic Amanita. The ten listed kinds of psilocybe mushroom includes Stropharia and Panaeolus species, which are erroneously considered to have a "latent" ability to produce psilocybin. The book also gives details on Hypholoma cyanescens which is only found in North Africa (classified now as Psilocybe mairei). It seems the author confused this species for Psilocybe cyanescens which can be found in Britain. The dosage information given for P.semilanceata is so wrong it's potentially dangerous. The section on law is poorly researched. This book is highly inaccurate and I would instead recommend "Magic Mushrooms Around the World" by Jochen Gartz. It gives good info relevant to species found in Britain. |

More than 500 species of mushrooms found in the Pacific Northwest and western Canada, from Manitoba to the Pacific Coast and from the Yukon to California described and meticulously illustrated in full color.
The author: 'I'm not only the author but also the illustrator of this book, which describes mushrooms I have found over many years of collecting, mostly around our cabin at Sandy Lake (Alberta).
Since the late '60s I have been taking my paints, easel and boards into the woods. When I spotted a mushroom new to me, I sat down and painted it in its own environment, always life size. When the painting was finished I collected a few of the mushrooms in different stages of development, and used them back at home to record further details in my sketchbook and to prepare dried specimens to send to several academic contacts who used them in their research.
I have found species numbering in the thousands over the years. I have a background in botany, so I was familiar with classification systems. The classification of fungi changes quite a bit as knowledge advances, and I have developed a bookkeeping system based on card files and my sketchbooks to keep track of what I've found and where it fits.' |

Mushrooms in Texas? Yes, it's true. One of the best-kept secrets in the Lone Star state is that mushrooms can be found in almost every region. Thousands of species of mushrooms flourish in Texas from the desert and semiarid regions of West Texas to the moist and acid soils of East Texas, where species that can also be found in South America live alongside those that might be spotted in Malaysia and Europe. At last, here is the Texas mushroom book--a colorful, easy-to-follow guide that will surprise and delight uninitiated nature enthusiasts and at the same time provide the experienced mushroom hunter with the first field guide of its kind in Texas. Excellent color photographs and precise descriptions of over 200 species will enable the mushroom hunter--even the amateur--to make quick, careful easy distinctions between the edible varieties and the potentially toxic ones. In addition, kitchen-tested recipes are included along with a microscopic spore chart, glossary, and blbllography. In Texas, mushroom hunting can be a year-round, state-wide activity, and with this enticing introduction, collecting, identifying, and preparing wild mushrooms will become an activity the entire family can enjoy while appreciating the beauty of Texas from a new and fascinating angle. |
