I have successfully tried new method on growing mushrooms for purely personal use.
Rice cakes are made in traditional MMGG way. Make ordinary cakes (I use 2/5 of plain brown rice,
3/5 vermiculite lookalike) and same amount water that I use rice. Then I thin foil them and boil them in ordinary pot
with top on for one hour. Inject spores, wait till fully grown.
After removal I prepare some kind of (preferably transparent) pot where I put about 2 cm of
crushed tile mixture (Vermiculite lookalike I was talking about...) and put water with some
hydrogen peroxide on it till they are almost covered. Then I put cakes on top of this and cover
these then loosely with wet (I boil them before use) vermiculite lookalike and put plastic foil
with needle holes on it to top of container. After few days I get beautiful pinheads and have
had no contamination problems. This is very similar to Poor Man's terrarium except for covering
cakes. Moisture in pot stays very stable and high and I have had very good fruitings on this.
If you use a transparent aquarium you can put easily 10 cakes on one aquarium and it
looks really nice too. It's very decorative, if you are tough enough to put it in your living
room...beautiful mushrooms fruiting...hey why not put lighting there too... mycoterrarium would
look neat!!!
